She and her husband and 2 children lived in Mossley, Greater Manchester, for over 30 years, and several of her novels are set in that area - the best known being Mr Wroe’s Virgins. She has spent a lot of time in Australia, where her mother and siblings live, and has set stories and one novel (Promised Lands) over there. Since 2013 she has lived in Oxfordshire

Jane was born in London and grew up in Birmingham and Oxford, apart from 18 months in New York state when she was 13. She read English at Cambridge and taught full time for 3 years before deciding to prioritise her writing by teaching part time. Since then she has taught in secondary schools, a sixth form college, adult education and HE, before making the switch to teaching creative writing and taking writing residencies. Her first novel, Separate Tracks, was published in 1983 and since then she has published a novel every four years or so.
